Academic Advising
As a student, you will be provided with an academic advisor to assist you and guide you in course selection during your time at Michigan Tech.
Your academic advisor will assist you with• exploring career options
• answering questions about your major, minor, and academic policies
• understanding degree requirements
• planning your overall curriculum and semester course selection
• finding other University and community resources
When you plan to see your academic advisor, you are responsible for
• preparing a list of questions in advance
• working out a tentative schedule for the upcoming semester
• taking responsibility for decisions made and following through
• seeking out resources and referrals offered
Remember that you are responsible for knowing your degree requirements and making your academic choices accordingly. Your advisor is available to assist you with this process.
When you check in for Orientation, you will receive details on how to contact your advisor. You will also meet with your advisor for a group meeting as a part of the scheduled orientation events.
Changing Your Major
The process of selecting a major is easy for some; it seems they have known what they wanted to do since grade school. However, that is not the case for everyone. Plenty of first-year students start college unsure of their major., and some college students decide to change their major. You can start this process now by working with your high school guidance counselor; they may have resources that can assist you. You can also visit the Michigan Tech website and explore the many different majors, minors, and certificate programs offered. When you arrive on campus, talk with other students, academic advisors, and professors about majors and careers. Get involved in a student organization and use the resources at the Career Center. Many of the first-year courses will assist you in exploring your career options as well.
If you wish to discuss a possible change of major from what you originally listed on your application for admission, contact the Admissions staff at 888-688-1885 or email mtu4u@mtu.edu prior to Orientation. Please note that, for financial aid reasons, all incoming students must declare a major.
