Family Partners

Parents, you are an important factor in the success of your first-year student. At Tech, we view your student as a responsible, accountable, and capable young adult. We respect your student’s decisions and privacy, but we don’t always promise confidentiality—we will get others involved to ensure their well-being.

We view parents and family members as our partners in the success of their student. We respect your need to guide, encourage, and be involved, but please remember our preference is to work directly with your student, as they need to learn important life skills. Please note the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (also referred to as FERPA or the Buckley Amendment) does not permit public colleges and universities to provide information about a student without the student’s permission.

Michigan Tech provides online Banweb Guest Access, which allows students to grant selected individuals access to their private student record information including grades, online billing notification, and paying the student bill on the web. Students may authorize access from the Michigan Tech Banweb login page at www.banweb.mtu.edu. For more information, please contact the Office of Student Records and Registration at 906-487-2319 or stuosrr@mtu.edu.

Here are some Michigan Tech websites just for you: www.mtu.edu/parentsfamily/ and www.sa.mtu.edu/fyp/parents.html.

Grades

You are not even here yet, so it may seem odd to be reading about first-semester grades, but we want to encourage you and your family to talk about academic expectations—yours and theirs. Set some goals for yourself and talk about how you plan to achieve them. Also agree to talk should you need to modify your goals throughout the semester.

Dual Enrollment Credit

If you’ve taken courses for college credit and want to transfer credits to Michigan Tech, you need to have an official transcript sent to Michigan Tech directly from the college or school where you took the courses.
