Financial Aid FAQ's
How do I apply for aid at Michigan Tech?To apply for need-based federal and state financial aid, students need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year. This can be done at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You and your parent will need a PIN to sign the FAFSA. You may request one at pin.ed.gov. To receive priority financial aid consideration at Michigan Tech, the FAFSA must be received by the federal processor by March 1.
How and when will I learn what aid I'm receiving?
If you filed your FAFSA by March 1, you will have received an award notice by April 1. This information will be sent to you via your HuskyMail address. Be sure to check your Michigan Tech email often. If your application is selected for a process called verification, there are items that need to be verified on your FAFSA before aid can be disbursed. Be sure to submit any documentation requested by the Financial Aid Office in a timely manner.
What if I did not complete the FAFSA by the March 1 priority filing date?
You can still apply for financial aid after the priority filing date, but funds may be limited.
Are non-Michigan residents eligible for assistance?
All students who are US citizens or eligible noncitizens may apply for federally funded financial assistance; however, only Michigan residents are eligible to receive aid provided by the State of Michigan. Learn more about aid programs by visiting the Financial Aid website at www.finaid.mtu.edu.
What type of financial aid is available for international students?
Financial aid regulations for international students differ from those for US citizens and eligible non-citizens. For more information, please visit the website for International Programs and Services at www.ips.mtu.edu/accepted.
Will my financial aid be renewed each year?
Financial aid is not automatically renewed or guaranteed from one year to the next. You must reapply for financial aid every year by completing the FAFSA or the Renewal FAFSA. Also, program funding is dependent upon annual appropriations.
Must I maintain a certain GPA to be eligible for financial aid?
Yes, you must be making satisfactory progress toward graduation as defined by the Financial Aid Office and federal/state regulations. Also, scholarships usually require a certain grade point average for renewal. Learn about these requirements by visiting the Financial Aid website.
How do I find out about student employment?
Both non-work-study and work-study positions are available on campus. Work-study positions are based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA results and are awarded as part of the financial aid package.
The majority of students working on campus are employed through non-work-study. Contact departments that you may be interested in working for, such as: Facilities Management–Operations, School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, Educational Opportunity, Auxiliary Services, and Housing. The Career Center also lists job opportunities. To access online employment applications for these departments, do an A-Z search from the Michigan Tech home page.
How many credits do I need to carry to be considered full-time for financial aid purposes?
A full-time course load is 12 billable credits. Audited courses do not count. Courses need to be scheduled by the end of the official add period.
