Michigan Tech requires all first-year students who are not living with their families to live in the residence halls. The halls are a great place to study and meet new people. In addition, both professional and student staff are available to answer your questions

You may choose to live in one of three residence halls. The three halls are different in size and appearance; however, they are similar in service. Each hall has its own dining facility, study lounge, game room, kitchenettes, sauna, laundry facility, fitness rooms, reception desk, and lounges.

Douglass Houghton Hall (DHH), our smallest residence hall, has about 350 student spaces available in the three-story structure. This historic building was constructed in the late 1930s and characterizes that time period, with its beautiful architectural details.

McNair Hall has a great view of the Keweenaw Waterway. The McNair complex consists of three buildings. West McNair has two stories, while East McNair has five stories. These two living units are connected by the dining services building. There are about 650 spaces available for assignment in McNair Hall.

Wadsworth Hall (Wads) has been recently renovated and is the largest hall—one-quarter mile long and five stories high, with approximately 1,050 spaces available for assignment. Each floor is divided into “houses,” which give you a small community atmosphere.

The Campus Café is located in Wadsworth Hall and is open to anyone on campus. It offers a convenient place to relax away from the books, as well as late-night dining and snacking options.

The residence halls at Michigan Tech are smoke free. Smoking is not permitted in any residence hall area. This includes resident rooms, hallways, restrooms, lobbies, lounges, elevators, stairwells, and enclosed entrance foyers. Exterior smoking locations are available in designated areas that are in close proximity to the residence halls. These locations can be found by visiting www.housing.mtu.edu and clicking on the facilities tab.

Break Periods

During the Thanksgiving and spring breaks, you may occupy your room by registering at the reception desk during the preceding week. Dining halls are closed during the breaks.
The halls are closed, and you must vacate the building, during the three-week semester break which begins in December. For an additional charge, residents of the twelve-month floor may occupy their rooms during the semester break and summer semester.
