Reading As Inquiry

Reading as Inquiry is a University-wide initiative coordinated by the Department of Humanities and the Office of First-Year Programs to help prepare you for college-level reading, inquiry, and discussion. A new summer reading book is chosen each year by a committee of students, faculty, and staff members. All first-year students are expected to read this book before arriving at Michigan Tech.

During Orientation, you will meet with a member of the faculty or staff and your Orientation team to discuss the book as a group. Then, the author of the book or a well-known scholar will speak about the story, its characters, and its themes. Additional activities during Orientation will also focus on the book.

This reading will help you make new friends. For example, when you contact your new roommate, you will be able to start a conversation by discussing the summer reading.

The book choice will be announced this spring and information will be sent to you with all of the summer reading details.

Michigan Tech Avenue

Don’t forget to check your Avenue on a regular basis. Important information regarding class scheduling, financial aid, housing, and more continues to be provided on your Avenue. Get a head start on meeting other incoming students by creating a profile on Rendezvous—a social networking site similar to MySpace, but only for students who have been accepted to Tech. You can also chat online with students or the admissions staff. Have a question? Check out the discussion forums. All of this and more is on your Avenue at avenue.mtu.edu.

Mentor Network

There are many great options for you to receive academic assistance from Michigan Tech. One resource is the Mentor Network coordinated by First-Year Programs and Residence Life. Academic mentors are available to help you with your transition to college by providing study groups, academic resources, and help with studying. For more information, visit the First-Year Programs website at www.firstyear.mtu.edu.
