What is the Visual and Performing Arts Learning Community?

The learning community will be a house in Wadsworth Hall reserved for students interested and active in the Visual and Performing Arts. It is for students who wish to build connections with departmental staff, faculty, and other students who are interested in the arts. The community was built because there is a natural draw between people in the arts. It was also built be a community which all of those involved in the arts can enjoy.

What are some typical VPA activities?

As a participant in the VPA program, you will have the opportunity to get involved in numerous social and educational activities:

 

Social Opportunities

  • Parade of Nations - a parade held in celebration of diversity, showcasing cultural traditions
  • Homecoming - Traditional hobo theme with activities including a parade, banner competition, and hobo games
  • Safe House - the Residence Hall Halloween Haunted House.
  • Michigan Tech's annual Winter Carnival. Activities include competitions in snow sculpture, ice bowling, snow volleyball, broomball, snowshoe racing, skiing, and curling.
  • Sporting activities including IM sports, Broomball, and Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Numerous weekly and monthly social activities. Some past activities have included sledding, cookouts, camping, movie nights, coffeehouse, campus sporting events, and an annual team challenge course.
  • Campus Fine Arts events such as concerts, theater productions, and comedians.

 

Educational Opportunities

  • Enroll in the "Creating your Success" class. This is a one credit course designed to help first year students become acclimated to university life. 
  • Develop an academic plan with your peer mentor.
  • Attend presentations, workshops, and field trips designed to enhance your academic experience and familiarize with VPA staff and faculty.

 

What is expected of VPA participants?

  • Live in a co-ed environment
  • Be a positive member of your residence hall community
  • Member of participant in one of the Visual and Performing Arts majors, minors, classes, or activities
  • Participate in events
  • Complete the requirements of your Learning Community Agreement
  • Pay a $30.00 per semester fee that is used to support additional programming, activities and staff
  • Meet new people, learn new things, and have a great time at Tech
